Metagenomes of Archaeal Viruses in Hypersaline Environments

Fernando Santos, María D.Ramos-Barbero, Josefa Antón

University of Alicante, Alicante, Spain.

Abstract

The microbiota of hypersaline environments close to saturation is generally dominated by extremely halophilic Archaea and therefore these systems harbor a high proportion of archaeal viruses that can be characterized using metagenomics. This approach has provided information regarding haloarchaeal viruses that were not previously isolated, such as the ones infecting the square euryarchaeon Haloquadratum sp. or the recently described Nanohalaorchaea.

Key words: Euryarchaea, Halophage, Haloquadratum, Halovirus, Hypersaline, Nanohaloarchaea.
